GIS Summer Camp for Students
Grade 6–9 students:
Spend 4 days this summer using advanced computer technology—and exploring outdoors!
This summer students and teachers will gather at Cayuga Community College in Auburn
to spend a week learning high-tech skills used in the field, in the lab—and even
in space—to better understand our world.
- 4 day-time camp for students Grades 6-9
- Hands-on computer and field experience
- Collect and
analyze data for group project
- Explore careers using geospatial technologies
From Monday through Thursday, June 29 - July 2, the Institute for the Application of
Geospatial Technologies (IAGT) will team with Cayuga Community College, SUNY
College of Environmental Science and Forestry, the National Geospatial Technology
Center, New York State Energy and Research Development Authority and the New York
State GIS Association to host
Teaching with Spatial Technology (TwiST) Workshop, a workshop designed for educators. Concurrently,
the college and IAGT are offering a GIS Summer Camp segment devoted entirely to
students in grades six through nine.
In the GIS Summer Camp, students will gain hands-on experience in
Geographic Information Systems (GIS), the global positioning system (GPS), remote
sensing (aerial and satellite imagery) and other web-based resources. Working with college faculty from the college
and other geospatial professional staff, camp participants will apply
technology to real-world issues.
GIS Summer Camp:
The students' days, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., will feature training in GIS software
at the college’s computer lab and outdoor exploration and data collection in supervised
field teams. Students will learn about the history and environmental issues surrounding
their field data site and will be exposed to how GIS is used for investigative purposes.
The students will use their new GIS, GPS and remote sensing skills to map and examine
different social and environmental factors that may have an impact on the site.
Cost:
There is a registration
fee of $250 to cover
the cost that TwiST sponsors cannot. This fee includes all materials used in the
workshop. Transportation is provided for field excursions. Students are asked to
bring their own lunch.
Housing:
Cayuga Community
College (CCC) does not have on-campus housing. As we realize that students may be
coming from areas outside of the local community, students can stay at the Inn at
the Finger Lakes for an additional cost. For additional information on pricing and availability for
housing during the week, please contact us at 315-283-9413.
