TwiST Workshop
Incorporating GIS, GPS and Satellite Data in Classrooms
Teaching with Spatial Technology (TwiST) — Empowering
Student Discovery Through GIS is designed to teach K-14 teachers in the United States how
to use Geographic Information Technology (GIT) in the classroom. The TwiST Workshop started in 2001 as
the Conference on Remote Sensing Education (CORSE). Due to changes in technology
and devoting more time throughout the event to geospatial technologies
that use and advance remote sensing data, the title was changed in 2008, with
new additions to the format enhancing individuals' experiences.
TwiST is sponsored by the Institute
for the Application of Geospatial Technology, Cayuga Community
College, SUNY College of Environmental
Science and Forestry, the
National Geospatial Technology Center, the
New York State Energy Research and Development Authority School Power...NaturallySM Program, the Mid-Hudson Service Learning Institute for Watershed and Environmental Studies, the Lower Esophus River Watch, and the New York
State Education Department.
The workshop will be held in Auburn, NY June 29 - July 2, 2009. There will
be three tracks this year; Introductory, Intermediate, and Student.
For the intro and advanced track, each of the first two days is devoted
to learning GPS, GIS, and remote sensing. The last two days of the workshop
are devoted to incorporating lesson plans using GIS. The student track is designed for middle
school students. This year, a special session will focus on the use of geospatial technologies to explore solar and wind power as sources of alternative energies.
Please note: Space is limited. Applications and registrations will be
accepted until the workshop is full.
