SERVIR Project Overview

For the last 17 months, IAGT has been an active participant in the NASA-sponsored SERVIR project. SERVIR is a Regional Visualization and Monitoring System ("servir" means "to serve" in Spanish) for Mesoamerica that intensively utilizes satellite imagery and other data sources for environmental management, monitoring, and natural disaster support in the region. SERVIR is being implemented by NASA and other partners such as CATHALAC, USAID, the World Bank, CCAD, the Environmental Ministries of the Mesoamerican Countries, and many others. Through this project, NASA strives to enable expanded use of Earth science observations and predictive capabilities for managing the important resources of our planet.

IAGT’s role in this project is to provide enhanced mapping and 3D visualization capacity in support of SERVIR. It is anticipated that this enhanced visualization and mapping capacity will assist policy makers, scientists, educators, international organizations, and the general public in better understanding and addressing the complex and dynamic environmental and ecological issues in Mesoamerica. The end result of IAGT’s efforts will help foster data analysis and information exchange throughout Mesoamerica in ways previously unavailable.

Project Highlights

SERVIR Viz:
As part of ongoing efforts to support SERVIR, IAGT has developed SERVIR Viz; a customized version of NASA’s free, open-source, web-enabled, 3D earth exploration tool known as WorldWind. SERVIR Viz allows users to employ custom tools and view remotely-hosted data layers, maps, real-time satellite images, and other specialty SERVIR products relevant to the Mesoamerica region in an interactive, 3D globe environment. As the SERVIR project continues to evolve, and as the volume of users grows, IAGT plans to expand the tools, data, and images available through SERVIR Viz to best address the needs of the user community. SERVIR Viz is currently released as Version 2.0, and can be downloaded here.

Panama Workshop:
IAGT sponsored and delivered the "Mesoamerican Workshop on Emerging 3D Environmental Visualization Technologies and Geospatial Internet Mapping" in the City of Knowledge, Panama, January 18th – 20th, 2006. The purpose of the workshop was to review and discuss current internet mapping capabilities and challenges as experienced by each of the 8 countries in Mesoamerica, and to present, discuss, and provide hands-on usage and training of emerging 3D visualization tools that may be utilized in support of SERVIR. Results of the workshop have helped guide IAGT in the development of web-based, end-user applications that can be used for viewing and interacting with data and visualizations that support environmental management and stewardship efforts in the region.

SERVIR 2.0 Summit:
IAGT sponsored and hosted the first SERVIR Summit in the winter of 2006. The SERVIR Summit focused on bringing the SERVIR partners together for the first time. This two-day workshop provided a unique opportunity for SERVIR partners to showcase existing work, discuss short term goals and strategize for long term SERVIR development and sustainability. Given the distributed nature of the SERVIR project team, the SERVIR summit allowed project team members to meet with one another in order to enhance collaboration between partners, provided a venue for technology transfer discussions, and encouraged future collaboration for the benefit of SERVIR. Read much more about the Summit here.

Future Collaboration:
IAGT looks forward to continued partnership in this important project and will be supporting SERVIR for the foreseeable future. This partnership exemplifies IAGT’s ongoing mission to promote and foster the use of cutting-edge geospatial technologies for broad societal benefit.
