IAGT Profile
The Institute for the Application of Geospatial
Technology at Cayuga Community College, Inc. (IAGT) is a nonprofit organization
that is dedicated to accelerating the application of geospatial
information technology (GIT) across government, education, and
commercial sectors. IAGT is the complementary successor to, but
not a replacement for, NASA's Regional Application
Center for the Northeast (RACNE), which continues operations as part of Cayuga
Community College. In combination, IAGT and RACNE offer an enhanced
organizational approach to GIT issues.
GIT is a rapidly evolving
field. The final product of GIT is geographic-based information.
The practice of GIT combines the Global Positioning System (GPS),
remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS). GIT users
employ this cluster of techniques to acquire and analyze geographic
data. The information available from the analyses is distributed
in a variety of graphic representations (e.g. maps, three and four
dimensional visualizations, graphics, and enhanced imagery).
The ongoing challenge for IAGT
is to identify activities and areas of need where our efforts
will be of greatest benefit. IAGT's approach to this challenge
can be described as:
- Identifying current and potential GIT users and their needs
- Identifying and/or creating: sources of data, processes, and
systems in the field of GIT
- Modifying and integrating these elements through research that
often involves the construction of end-to-end prototype systems
in order to meet the needs of current and potential users
- Informing current and potential users of the opportunities
in the field of GIT
- Forming collaborative associations to apply GIT in the areas
of education, government, and commerce
IAGT embraces a vision of an inclusive collaboration of traditional,
nontraditional, and potential users of GIT from all facets of society.
Through these partnerships, the evolving benefits of GIT are available
to facilitate, inform, and illuminate individual and collective
endeavors.
