IAGT's Work Environment

IAGT's home office is located on the Cayuga Community College campus in Auburn, New York—a small Central New York city situated near three beautiful Finger Lakes: Owasco, Cayuga, and Skaneateles. Surrounded by farms and vineyards, Auburn is within easy driving distance to the bigger urban areas of Syracuse, Rochester and Ithaca; New York City is within a half day's drive.

Being situated on the Cayuga Community College campus makes it possible for IAGT staff to enjoy the diverse academic and cultural opportunities the college scene brings to students, faculty, and the community. Cayuga Community College is a unit of the State University of New York, and is the first community college in the nation to host a NASA Regional Applications Center. This Center is where IAGT has its origins, and, as a part of its ongoing mission, IAGT supports the college's associate's degree program in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Student interns work along side IAGT's highly talented geographic information technology specialists on projects for decision makers in government and for members of the commercial sector. In addition to interns, all GIS students are regularly invited to come into IAGT’s offices and observe the work in progress.

IAGT provides an environment that fosters a lively exchange of ideas and creative, collaborative approaches to the challenges presented by its clientele. Being particularly committed to workforce development, IAGT staff are encouraged to continually update their skills—either through coursework or participation in conferences related to the geospatial technologies. And, in striving for excellence in the work it generates, IAGT sponsors "brown bag lunch" seminars so those working on particular projects can share their experiences with other staff members and obtain their feedback.

IAGT is also actively involved in outreach activities, publishing newsletters and monographs describing its work and informing members of the government, educational, and commercial sectors of upcoming events. For the last three years, IAGT and others sponsored the Conference on Remote Sensing Education—helping educators learn ways to incorporate the geospatial technologies into their classroom curricula. The annual "GIS Day" open house, another one of IAGT's major outreach efforts, involves middle and high school teachers and students.

IAGT values diversity in its workforce and is a workplace focused on respect for the individual.
