Accelerating the benefits from creative applications of geospatial
technology in government, commerce, and the education community…
Education and Training Scholarship Fund
To create opportunities for students and teachers to learn how
to apply geospatial technology to help protect our home planet,
to serve society’s needs, and to improve quality of life
for all, IAGT has established an Education and Training Scholarship
Fund.
Your contribution supports IAGT-supervised student internships
and helps provide critically needed scholarships to students and
teachers participating in the annual Conference on Remote Sensing
Education (CORSE) held each year at Cayuga Community College in
Auburn, New York.
Student Internships
An internship in IAGT’s Work Cooperative Program is a part-time
paid position available to qualified students seeking to supplement
their educational programs with practical work experience. Interns
work side-by-side with geospatial technology professionals to help
solve real world problems. Under IAGT staff supervision, interns
provide technical support for IAGT’s projects by receiving
training in and applying: Geographic Information Systems (GIS),
the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Remote Sensing. Preference
is given to internship applicants enrolled in the Geographic Information
Systems associate’s degree program at Cayuga Community College
for spring and fall semesters. During the summer months, in addition
to Cayuga student candidates, internships may be awarded to high
school through post-graduate level students enrolled in other educational
institutions.
Conference on Remote Sensing Education
Each year, IAGT and Cayuga Community College host the national
Conference on Remote Sensing Education or CORSE. Co-sponsors typically
include the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA),
the Mid-Hudson Service Learning Institute, and the State University
of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry located
in Syracuse, New York. CORSE is designed to promote the use of
geospatial technology in the classrooms of K-12 teachers as well
as two-year-college educators. With an attendance of 60-80 participants
each year, the conference provides hands-on experience involving
the use of global positioning system (GPS) equipment and ArcView
GIS software. CORSE strongly emphasizes a service learning approach
to education, and guides participants through ways in which they
can apply geospatial technology to locally-based issues that can
be explored through computer-based mapping.
Arrangements are in place for CORSE participants, should they
choose, to receive either undergraduate credit through Cayuga Community
College, or graduate credit through the State University of New
York’s College of Environmental Science and Forestry.
