GIS, Site Analysis & Mapping
Vineyard Applications
IAGT provides several GIS services that can help growers visualize and manage agricultural data. IAGT has provided map layers, databases to store information, GPS surveys of farms, and web applications that allow growers and researches to access data via the Internet.
IAGT has collaborated with Cornell to provide GIS services for climate and viticulture site evaluation research projects. The climate project involved setting up a database to store temperature data that is collected every ten minutes from 95 sensors located in eight vineyards throughout the Finger Lakes region. An interactive web mapping application was developed to query the database and view the data with GIS layers (http://sdeproto.iagt.org/vineyardtemps/index.aspx).
IAGT’s role in the site evaluation project was to develop a web-based, interactive mapping application that could be used as a one-stop-shop for geospatial data for current growers and for other people who might be interested in establishing a vineyard within New York State (http://arcserver2.iagt.org/vll/data.aspx).
IAGT has also provided GIS services to individual vineyard managers. Once the GIS data is developed it is exported to TerraGo Technologoie’s GeoPDF format making the data layers and attribute information easily accessible in Adobe Reader without requiring expensive GIS software.
