EarthScope World Wind Plug-in

World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there. EarthScope World Wind Plug-in

The EarthScope Plug-In for World Wind was developed by IAGT to provide a mechanism for adding various EarthScope station layers within the World Wind environment. The EarthScope layers render on top of the base World Wind imagery, and the EarthScope station attributes can be displayed by selecting individual stations. The EarthScope layers are dynamically created from server-based files that can be updated at regular intervals. See the details below on which layers are currently being made available. Note that the symbology and attributes shown can be modified to suit particular needs. Additional layers representing alternative views of the EarthScope facilities can also be created.

How to:

Install NASA World Wind:

• Download the World Wind (Version 1.3.3.1) application set up file (approx. 53Mb) here
• Double click the World Wind installation icon to begin the installation.
• The installation wizard will guide you through the process.

Install the EarthScope Plug-In file:

• Once World Wind is installed, click on the above link to download the Plug-In.
• Double click the EarthScope Plug-in executable to install the Plug-In. If you accepted the defaults when installing WorldWind, just accept the defaults again. It is looking for the top level folder of the WorldWind installation, i.e. "World Wind 1.3"

Load the EarthScope Plug-In:

• Open the World Wind application.
• Open the Plug-In menu item and choose Load/Unload.
• Select the EarthScope Plug-In from the list and click the Load button. Optionally, check the Start-up check box to have the Plug-In load on application start up.
• The Plug-In will automatically add the EarthScope points to the Layer Manager.
• The Plug-In adds a new menu item to the “Plug-In” menu called “EarthScope”. Inside that menu item, there are options for all available EarthScope layers. Every time one of these layers is selected through the menus, the latest version of the layer’s data will be downloaded from the internet.
