CORSE 2006 - Conference on Remote Sensing Education: Learn How to use GIS, GPS, & Satellite Data in the Classroom

LEARN HOW TO USE GIS, GPS, & SATELLITE DATA IN THE CLASSROOM

Like CORSE 2001-2005, CORSE 2006, the Conference on Remote Sensing Education, is designed to teach K-14 teachers in the United States how to use Geographic Information Technology (GIT) in the classroom.

The Conference is sponsored the Institute for the Application of Geospatial Technology, the Mid-Hudson Service Learning Institute for Watershed and Environmental Studies, Cayuga Community College, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and the New York State Education Department.

The conference will be held in Auburn , NY June 26 - 30, 2006. There will be introductory and intermediate tracks this year. Each of the first three days for either track is devoted to learning GPS, GIS, and remote sensing. The last two days of the conference will be devoted to incorporating lesson plans that support service-learning projects using GIS.

The introductory track will focus on incorporating the technologies into community service learning exercises. Community service works best when teachers and students and the community all work together. Therefore, attendees are encouraged to bring one student and one public official or a community volunteer to work with during the conference. The team approach is not mandatory for introductory track attendees, but there is an added incentive to bring teammates. A limited number of scholarships are available to New York State participants who come as part of a team. See Scholarships below for more information.

Service Learning
in Action

The intermediate track is intended for return participants or participants who have experience with the technologies. This track will include refresher lessons and then give participants the opportunity to learn more advanced applications.

Learning Activities

There are two tracks in the conference: one for teachers who have had no previous experience with GIT; and one for those who have used the technologies.

June 26— Nature of spatial data and hands-on GPS exercises
June 27— Hands-on instruction in GIS and remote sensing
June 28— Hands-on instruction in GIS and remote sensing
June 29 — Lesson plan integration and service learning exercises
June 30 — Lesson plan integration and final presentations

Application Process

Because we feel that it is very important that the attendees be able to support one another when they return to their schools, we prefer applicants who apply in pairs from the same school or nearby schools. Although pairs of applicants will be given preference, teachers who wish to attend by themselves should not hesitate to apply. To apply, follow this link. After applying, you will be contacted by email (within one week of applying), indicating whether or not your application has been accepted. Those who are accepted will be provided with details for completing the registration process.

Scholarships

There are a limited number of scholarships available to New York State applicants who come as part of a 3-person team. The team consists of:

K-14 teacher
7th-12th grade student
and local public official (such as a member of a town board, planning committee, etc or a community volunteer).

The scholarships cover the registration fee, Sunday-Thursday night lodging (2 to a room), all meals, and a multiple-seat ArcView site license for the team's school.

The conference committee is currently seeking other sources of funding to provide similar scholarships to applicants who do not come as part of a team. There is no guarantee we will get additional funding, so please be prepared to pay these costs yourself.

Conference Costs

Registration Fee

For those not receiving scholarships, there is a registration fee of $300 to cover costs that the sponsors cannot. This fee includes all books and materials used in the conference, a GPS receiver (pictured at right) and PC Cable for downloading data to your computer, and an opportunity to purchase a greatly discounted site license for ArcView 3.3 ($250 vs. $4000 list price). Breakfast and lunch are also included each day as well as dinners Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights. Transportation to and from the Holiday Inn to Cayuga Community College will also be provided during the conference.

Lodging

A block of rooms has been held at the Holiday Inn with a conference rate of $37.50 per person per night for a double occupancy room (one room with 2 queen beds), or you may choose to pay $75 per night for single occupancy. Conference participants are responsible for making their own reservations and paying for the room. Contact the Auburn Holiday Inn at 315-253-4531. Naturally, you may also commute to the conference or choose accommodations other than the Holiday Inn.

Graduate Credit

Conference attendees will be able to earn one graduate credit hour course entitled "GIT in the Classroom" from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse , NY by attending the entire conference.
