CORSE 2007 Recap
CORSE
2007, held June 25-29 at Cayuga Community College, was
a successful event this year with over 50 participants hailing
from New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and all the way from the
state of Washington. Participants included elementary, middle and
high school teachers, middle and high school students, university
faculty, and community members. Subjects taught by participants
included, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Math, Physics,
History, Social Studies, Biology, Physical Education, Geography,
Technology, International Foods and Special Education.
Participants this year spent the first few days getting to know

guest speakers presented on topics that included GIS projects currently
active in schools, experiences with integration of GIS in classrooms
and community projects, NASA World Wind, remote sensing using Ukrainian
imagery, web data portals and others. The remaining two days were
focused on lesson planning and the development of GIS projects. While
the days were filled with training and various geospatial activities,
the evenings included Mike Sprague from RiverWorks Inc. as the keynote
speaker Monday night, live local music, picnics and geocaching.
The last day participants present projects that were developed that
teachers will take back and integrate into their classrooms. Some
of the projects presented include:
- Flood Plain Analysis and Emergency Planning
- Boquet Wetland Monitoring Project
- Firewood Collection for the Needy
- Global Awareness of Geography on the Development of Civilizations

The conclusion of CORSE 2007, planning for next
year's event has already begun. Next year however, the CORSE name
will no longer be used. Instead, the name is changing to Teaching
with Spatial Technology (TwiST) to
more accurately reflect the variety of geospatial applications that
are explored during the week-long workshop. In 2008, the workshop
will be held mid-July.
